Original archive sources

Follow the original documents: personnel registers, administrative papers and manuscript images, with their archival references and access conditions.

The Post and Telegraph careers in this collection come from personnel records. Further research begins with the exact register, file and page. A catalogue description helps locate that document; reading its image supplies a different level of evidence. The examples below keep original scans, historical copies and modern reproductions distinct.

The primary archive routes

Meşihat personnel files

İSAM’s Ulema Sicil Dosyaları (İKA USD) catalogue records religious officials’ personnel files. The live collection policy makes descriptions available online and provides a request route for digital document copies.

Copies can be requested from arsiv@isam.org.tr using the full İKA reference. The collection records that the originals were transferred to the State Archives.

Read a manuscript alongside its Turkish transcription

The published Latin-script Turkish edition of Meclis-i Meşâyih register 1747 supplies transcribed text, editorial summaries and original image identifiers. Its first two entries on PDF page 5 correspond to manuscript records 146 and 147 on written pages 1 and 2, shown on pages 2 and 3 of the original facsimile.

Read the Latin-script Turkish transcription (PDF) · Transcription catalogue: İKA MŞH MMD-1-a-1747-pdf

This is the scholarly transcription published in 2025, offered as a 132-page PDF. Its identifiers provide a route back to the original manuscript; a transcription and its source image remain distinct evidence.

Read the document and its locator together

Retain the archive, fonds or collection, full file reference, written page or folio, and PDF image number. Preserve the source’s calendar and uncertainty. A modern transcription can help read a manuscript, but it should remain identified as a transcription. A photographed archival spread reproduced in a thesis remains identified as a reproduction.

A source’s availability does not establish that it concerns an official in this collection. Matching a person requires compatible dates, places, family or service details and an appropriate archival reference. The primary-document examples here are source access checks; they do not create additional biographies or person matches.

Supplementary biographical reference

TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi can provide context and further archival citations. Its name-search review directory is supplementary: title overlaps remain leads unless a separate identity check supports a match.
