Archives and original documents

Where the original registers and papers can be read, with the exact reference of each.

The Post and Telegraph careers of the collection come from personnel records. Further research starts from the exact register, file and page. A catalogue description helps to find a document. Reading its image is a different level of evidence. The examples below keep original scans, historical copies and modern reproductions apart. A document found here does not show that it concerns an official of the collection: that needs matching dates, places, family or service details and an archive reference. How to read the records.

Archive routes

Civil personnel registers

The Ottoman Archive’s DH.SAİD.d registers are the first route to original Sicill-i Ahvâl entries. Use an exact register and written page: a name alone does not find the right record.

Search the State Archives catalogue (BETSİS) · A public personnel-register scan

The catalogue route needs researcher sign-in. Direct access to the original image was not checked in a signed-in session.

Meşihat personnel files

İSAM’s Ulema Sicil Dosyaları (İKA USD) catalogue describes the personnel files of religious officials. Descriptions are online, and copies of the documents can be requested.

Browse the ulema personnel-file catalogue

Request copies from arsiv@isam.org.tr with the full İKA reference. The collection records that the originals were transferred to the State Archives.

Open Meşihat manuscripts

The Meclis-i Meşâyih collection holds publicly readable register images beside modern Latin transcriptions. The original 1747 register was downloaded and inspected.

Browse the Meclis-i Meşâyih collection · The complete register 1747 (PDF)

Other Meşihat registers and the conditions for copies have a separate catalogue and request policy.

Transcriptions and editions

A published transcription and its source image are different evidence. The Latin-script Turkish edition of Meclis-i Meşâyih register 1747 gives transcribed text, editorial summaries and the identifiers of the original images. Its first two entries on PDF page 5 correspond to manuscript records 146 and 147, on written pages 1 and 2, which are pages 2 and 3 of the facsimile.

The Latin-script Turkish transcription (PDF, 132 pages) · Catalogue entry İKA MŞH MMD-1-a-1747-pdf

Keep the archive or collection, the full file reference, the written page or folio and the PDF image number. Keep the calendar and the uncertainty of the source. A transcription stays a transcription, and a photographed spread in a thesis stays a reproduction.

Studies and other collections

The civil Sicill-i Ahvâl registers cover about 51,700 officials. The archive guide of 2017 (p. 140) gives 51,652 officials in 201 registers. The TDV article gives 51,698 after duplicates are removed. The totals differ and both are kept. İSAM’s database overview describes 6,835 ulema personnel files. Registers, files and single documents are different units and are not added into one total.
