Profile of the group: Technical and stores

No source read describes Fabrika Mudur Muavini by itself, so this is the profile of its group of job titles.

Technical offices of the Post and Telegraph ministry, among them the telegraph factory, the Engineer Office (mühendis kalemi) and the science office (fen kalemi), all three named in the ministry's journal of 1901.1 The factory, opened in 1869, made and repaired all kinds of telegraph instruments and made batteries and postal goods,2,3 and the science office was directed for a long time by the French electrician Emile Lacoine, later the ministry's science adviser (fen müşaviri).4,5

History

Until 1869 all telegraph machines were imported, and in that year the administration began to set up its own factory, which had eleven employees four years later and over a hundred by 1915.6,3 From 1883 to 1891 the ministry sent Darüşşafaka graduates already in its service to study telegraphy in Paris,7,8 and the twelve who had to return when the students were called back in 1892 were given important posts in the ministry.8 In 1901 two of them were deputy directors, Mehmet Bey of the Engineer Office and Ferid Bey of the factory.9
