Life#
Hasan Ferit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Reji Muduru". Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Hasan Ferit in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Muhendis Kalemi, where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Sirkeci from 1895 to 1899. From 1899 to 1911 the annual entries place Hasan Ferit again in Istanbul, first as Fabrika Mudur Muavini, from 1901/02 as Fabrika Muduru, from 1909/10 as a chief director (Başmüdür) and from 1910/11 as Meskukat Muduru.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 5,000 in 1910/11, the peak, as Meskukat Muduru in Istanbul, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 11.1 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
