Life#
Ahmet Avni Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Avni also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1885/86, Ahmet Avni began work in Acre (Akka), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Ahmet Avni in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Buyuk karaburun, Bursa and Istanbul from 1890 to 1894, then a return to Bursa from 1894 to 1899. Ahmet Avni then moved to Mudanya and Bandırma from 1899 to 1902. The last posts were in Susurluk from 1902 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Susurluk, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
