Life#
Born in Çanakkale in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Agop Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father's occupation was "Reji Memuru". Agop had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 16, in 1886/87, Agop began work in Serres (Siroz), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1894/95, every annual entry places Agop in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 300 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 24,120 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
