Life#
Ahmet Hidayet Efendi was born in Çanakkale in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hidayet also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 30, in 1903/04, Ahmet Hidayet began work in Melnik (Menlik), paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Ahmet Hidayet in Melnik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Ayvalık from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 300 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Ayvalık, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less.
