Life#
Abdullah Efendi was born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
At about 14, in 1886/87, Abdullah began work in Rhodes, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Abdullah as Musillik in Rhodes, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1889/90. Abdullah then moved to Vize, Bitola (Manastır) and Neapoli (Nasliç) from 1890 to 1895, then Metsovo (Meçova) from 1895 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Preveza (Preveze) in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 720 in 1906/07, as 2. Müdür in Preveza, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 100,464 kuruş, 80 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
