Life#
Hacı Ali Efendi was born in Ürgüp in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1881/82, Ali began work in Ürgüp, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Ali as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Heraklion (Kandiye). Next came Aydın in 1892/93 and Aleppo in 1893/94. From 1894 to 1907 every annual entry places Ali in Acibadem.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 600 in 1906/07, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Acibadem, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
