Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Ali Vasfi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ali Vasfi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1880/81, Ali Vasfi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 120 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1880/81, to 1895/96, every annual entry places Ali Vasfi in the same post, Hademe, in Istanbul.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 120 kuruş a month in 1880/81, as Hademe in Istanbul, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 16 years the salary stood below the first, 100 kuruş against 120; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low.
