Life#
Born in Ürgüp in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Nurettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Nurettin had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 18, in 1875/76, Nurettin began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Nurettin in Edirne as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Nurettin then moved to Hadımköy in 1878/79, then Kayseri from 1879 to 1885. The annual lists then follow Nurettin to Zara from 1885 to 1892, then Sivas and Sarız from 1892 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Karacabey (Mihaliç) from 1898 to 1901.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 600 in 1878/79, as Muhabere Memuru in Hadımköy, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 122,640 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
