Life#
Mehmet Nazım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Üsküdar in 1868/69, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mehmet Nazım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Üsküdar, where the entries run to 1871/72. From 1872 to 1903 the annual entries place Mehmet Nazım in Istanbul, the birthplace. Fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 1,300 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less.
