Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1836/37 (AH 1252) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1856/57, the official began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with the official as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. The official then moved to Skopje (Üsküp) from 1859 to 1864, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Veles (Köprülü) and Kyustendil (Köstendil) from 1864 to 1867. Next came a return to Veles from 1867 to 1870, then Gjakova in 1870/71. From 1871 to 1904 every annual entry places the official in Prilep (Pirlepe). Entries spanning 47 years are rare, reached by only 32 of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to 800 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Prilep, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 47 years of salary come to 344,640 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
