Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yusuf Bey was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Yusuf had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1866/67, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Yusuf in Edirne as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1871/72. Next came Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1872 to 1878, then Ivazkoyu in 1878. From 1878 to 1902 the annual entries place Yusuf again in Svilengrad. Fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 650 in 1890/91, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Svilengrad, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 224,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
