Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1888/89, Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Osman Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a deliverer (Müvezzi). The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1892 to 1901, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1901 to 1905.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 850 in 1892/93, as Seyyar Memur in Svilengrad, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 127,500 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
