What the job was
Postman (müvezzi), who delivered letters to the addresses of their owners in the provincial towns; in Istanbul the city post did this work.
Duties
- carry letters to the addresses of their owners
- collect the delivery charge that the regulation of 1871 set
History
Under the regulation of 1871 a letter waited 24 hours at the post office for its owner and was then delivered; the regulation of 1882 ended the wait and made delivery immediate and free. An addition of 1888 barred carriers of deposits (emanetçi) and of bills (poliçeci) from serving as postmen. A postal commission of 1901 proposed grading postmen and giving them chances of promotion.
