Life#
Mıgırdıç Şinavder Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa); Mıgırdıç Şinavder also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 26, paid from the start, on 330 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mıgırdıç Şinavder in Istanbul as a deliverer (Müvezzi), where the entries run to 1879/80, with a rise to a post in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti) in 1876/77. From 1880 to 1890 the annual entries place Mıgırdıç Şinavder in Galata.
The salary went from 330 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 500 in 1887/88, the peak, in the Pul Kitabeti in Galata, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 94,680 kuruş, 75 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
