Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mehmet Galip Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Galip had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 12, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mehmet Galip in Aleppo (Halep) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1873/74. Mehmet Galip then moved to Çanakkale and Rumelikavağı from 1874 to 1879. From 1880 to 1907 every annual entry places Mehmet Galip in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1883/84 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti), from 1895/96 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) and from 1898/99 as Mersule Basmemuru.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 750 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Rumelikavağı, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 267,000 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
