Life#
Duranidis Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). Duranidis knew four languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 17, in 1871/72, Duranidis began work in Izmir (İzmir), paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Duranidis as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Izmir. From 1873 to 1904 the annual entries place Duranidis in Beyoğlu, first as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti, from 1883/84 in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) and from 1901/02 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 650 in 1895/96, in the Tahsilat Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 585 kuruş. In all, 34 years of salary come to 225,360 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
