Life#
Ahmet Naim Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 34, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 34 or older. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Ahmet Naim in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Naim to Sirkeci in 1892/93. From 1893 to 1906 the annual entries place Ahmet Naim again in Istanbul, first as Mersule Memuru, from 1897/98 in the Ambar Kalemi, from 1900/01 as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) and from 1901/02 in the Ambar Kalemi.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Ambar Kalemi in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
