Life#
Ali Haydar Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Mektupcu". At about 20, in 1874/75, Ali Haydar began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Ali Haydar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Edirne. Ali Haydar then moved to Beyoğlu from 1877 to 1883, then Misir from 1883 to 1888, with a rise to official (Memur). Next came Beyoğlu in 1888/89 and Heybeliada in 1889/90, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1890 to 1894. The last post was in Beyoğlu again in 1894/95.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 1,500 in 1885/86, the peak, as Memur in Misir, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
