Life#
Andon Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a money-changer (sarraf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Andon also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Andon began work in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Andon in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1877/78. The annual lists then follow Andon to Çanakkale, Aleppo (Halep) and Kastamonu from 1878 to 1884, then Serres (Siroz) from 1884 to 1898. Andon then moved to Kuşadası from 1898 to 1910. The last post was in Chios (Sakız) in 1910/11. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 900 in 1910/11, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Chios, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) probably refers to Andon, since the name and the birthplace agree.
