Life#
Jan Diraço Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Jan Diraço also attended the telegraph school. Jan Diraço knew five languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 16, in 1864/65, Jan Diraço began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Jan Diraço in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Jan Diraço to Thessaloniki in 1867/68, as an official (Memur). From 1868 to 1906 the annual entries place Jan Diraço again in Beyoğlu. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 1,100 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06; the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
