Life#
Andon Körkis Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Andon Körkis also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Armenian, French and Greek (Rum).
At about 16, in 1865/66, Andon Körkis began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Andon Körkis as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace. From 1870 to 1905 every annual entry places Andon Körkis in Beyoğlu, first as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti, from 1898/99 as Huk Memuru. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 800 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when four in five paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 720 kuruş. Over 38 years the salaries add up to 302,976 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
