Life#
Rupenyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tax farmer (mültezim). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Rupenyan also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1866/67, Rupenyan began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1868/69 to 1881/82 places Rupenyan in the same office, foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 650 in 1878/79, in the Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi in Istanbul, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
