Life

Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Galip Bey was the child of an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at the Lisan Mektebi; Ali Galip also wrote French as well as Turkish. Few officials studied at Lisan Mektebi; only 3 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.

Ali Galip began work in the Tercume Odasi in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 17, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places Ali Galip in Istanbul, the birthplace, as PT Naziri. The last post was in Aydın in 1909/10, with a rise to Vali.

Pay rose from 15,000 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to a peak of 20,000 in 1909/10, as Vali in Aydın. Ali Galip was the best paid official of the lists in 1909/10; 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary ever were. The final annual entry is for 1909/10. The honours of Ali Galip were a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi and Osmani orders.
