Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266), Ahmet Halit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ahmet Halit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Aydın in 1869/70, at about 19, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Ahmet Halit in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Aydın. Ahmet Halit then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1870 to 1872, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit) in 1871/72, then Galata from 1872 to 1884, with a rise to a post in the Muhasebe Kalemi in 1880/81. From 1884 to 1907 the annual entries place Ahmet Halit again in Istanbul, first in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), from 1893/94 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru). Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 720 in 1905/06, the peak, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 39 years of salary come to 257,820 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
