Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Salih Kemal Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Salih Kemal had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 22, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1905/06 places Salih Kemal in the same post, letters official (Mekâtib Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
