Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Mehmet Bahattin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Bahattin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1885/86, Mehmet Bahattin began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Mehmet Bahattin as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Galata, where the entries run to 1887/88. From 1889 to 1906 the annual entries place Mehmet Bahattin in Istanbul, the birthplace.
