Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was the child of an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hamdi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1886/87, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Aydın, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 20 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Ahmet Hamdi in Aydın as an official (Memur). The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1894. From 1894 to 1904 every annual entry places Ahmet Hamdi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), from 1903/04 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
The salary went from 35 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 200 in 1897/98, the peak, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 21,300 kuruş, 32 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
