Life#
İbrahim Edhem Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Edhem also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İbrahim Edhem began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 19, paid from the start, on 270 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places İbrahim Edhem in Beirut (Beyrut) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1889/90. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Edhem to Jaffa in 1890/91, in the Ambar Kalemi. The last posts were in Beirut again from 1891 to 1896.
Pay rose from 270 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 400 in 1895/96, in the Ambar Kalemi in Beirut, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 28,980 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
