Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community, Fethullah Kemal Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa). Fethullah Kemal knew four languages, Arabic, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Aleppo in 1887/88, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Fethullah Kemal in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Aleppo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1892/93, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1890/91 and to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1892/93. From 1893 to 1898 the annual entries place Fethullah Kemal in Alexandria (İskenderiye).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 500 in 1897/98, as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Alexandria, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
