Life#
Born in Stara Zagora (Eski Zağra) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Salomon Efe came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father's occupation was "Haham". Salomon had four years of schooling, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa). In all Salomon knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 20, in 1888/89, Salomon began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1892/93, every annual entry places Salomon in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 75 in 1890/91, as Mersule Memuru in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 3,300 kuruş, 13 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
