Life#
Hafız Mahmut Nazif Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1886/87, Mahmut Nazif began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Mahmut Nazif in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 330 in 1901/02, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less.
