Life#
Hasan Bahri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Bahri began work in Ayaş in 1894/95, at about 26, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Hasan Bahri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ankara. Hasan Bahri then moved to seven places in ten years, from İzmit to Kastamonu, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1896/97. For 1898 to 1900 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Yozgat in 1906/07. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 480 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Yozgat, when half the paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 40,200 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
