Life#
Süleyman Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1871/72, Süleyman began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Süleyman in Istanbul as Tatar. Next came Bitola (Manastır) from 1873 to 1892, then Ankara from 1892 to 1901, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1901 to 1906.
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 800 in 1901/02, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 273,420 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
