Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Mehmet Aziz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Mehmet Aziz in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). From 1873 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Aziz in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with a rise to Rusumat Muhasebe Memuru.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 700 in 1895/96, as Rusumat Muhasebe Memuru in Thessaloniki, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 224,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
