Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Abdülhamit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Abdülhamit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
At about 23, in 1876/77, Abdülhamit began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1877/78 to 1892/93 every annual entry places Abdülhamit in Istanbul, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1878/79 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi) and from 1881/82 in the Icmal Kitabeti.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 440 in 1892/93, the peak, in the Icmal Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 56,040 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1892/93; the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
