Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Mehmet Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1877/78, Mehmet Nazmi began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Mehmet Nazmi in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Icmal Kitabeti, where the entries run to 1883/84. Next came Dimas in 1891/92, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Yemen from 1892 to 1895. Yemen, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 750 in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1894/95, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
