Life#
Abdullah Sevki Efendi was born in Yalvaç in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "haffaf(esnaf)". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Sevki also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1876/77, Abdullah Sevki began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Yalvaç, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Abdullah Sevki as an official (Memur) in Yalvaç, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1886/87, with a rise to tithe official (Aşar Memuru) in 1881/82. Abdullah Sevki then moved to Bozkır and Karaagac from 1888 to 1891, with a rise to Mal Muduru in 1888/89, then Eğirdir from 1891 to 1899. The last posts were in Uluborlu from 1899 to 1908.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 640 in 1897/98, as Mal Muduru in Eğirdir, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 183,444 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
