Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Eyüp Ragıp Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Eyüp Ragıp had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Eyüp Ragıp in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). For 1879 to 1882 the lists have no entry. Eyüp Ragıp then moved to Keşan and Samsun from 1882 to 1887. From 1887 to 1907 every annual entry places Eyüp Ragıp in Istanbul, the birthplace. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 500 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 120,000 kuruş, 77 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
