Life#
Antuvan Kabareciyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). Antuvan Kabareciyan knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 21, in 1878/79, Antuvan Kabareciyan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Antuvan Kabareciyan in Beyoğlu as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Antuvan Kabareciyan to Galata, Beyoğlu and Arnavutkoy from 1880 to 1887. From 1887 to 1907 the annual entries place Antuvan Kabareciyan again in Galata, first as Posta Memuru, from 1892/93 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 700 in 1906/07, as Mevrude Memuru in Galata, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 151,224 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
