Life#
Bedros Efendi was born in Edirne in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Bedros also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Edirne in 1875/76, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1878/79 to 1904/05 places Bedros in Edirne, the birthplace, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1901/02 as a central office official (Merkez Memuru).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 500 in 1883/84, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Edirne, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. In all, 20 years of salary come to 108,720 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
