Life#
Antranik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Antranik also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Antranik in Edirne as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Antranik then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik), Vlorë (Avlonya) and Babi seraskeri from 1880 to 1883, then Çanakkale from 1883 to 1889. Next came Mürefte from 1889 to 1895. The last posts were in Uşak in 1896/97 and Izmir (İzmir) in 1897/98. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 720 in 1896/97, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Uşak, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1897/98; the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
