Life#
Dikran Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Dikran also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 24, in 1878/79, Dikran began work in Aleppo (Halep), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Dikran as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Aleppo. Dikran then moved to Beirut (Beyrut) from 1882 to 1887, then Latakia (Lazkiye) from 1887 to 1889. The last posts were in Beirut again from 1889 to 1893.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1881/82, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Aleppo, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
