Life#
Born in Erzincan in 1845 (AH 1261), this official came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); the official also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
The official began work in Istanbul in 1864/65, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,050 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with the official as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Diyarbakır. Next came Sivas, Yozgat and Veles (Köprülü) from 1867 to 1873, then a return to Yozgat from 1873 to 1891. The annual lists then follow the official to Mount Athos (Aynaroz), Damascus (Şam) and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1891 to 1895. The last posts were in Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1896 to 1904, with a rise to director (Müdür). Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 1,050 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,350 in 1896/97, as Müdür in Baghdad, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
