Life#
Artin Şorun(?) Efendi was born in Yozgat in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Artin Şorun(?) also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Artin Şorun(?) began work in Kayseri in 1869/70, at about 24, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Artin Şorun(?) in Kayseri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1871/72. The lists have no entry for 1872 to 1874. The annual lists then follow Artin Şorun(?) to Yozgat in 1874/75, then back to Kayseri from 1877 to 1878, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). For 1875 to 1877 the lists have no entry. Artin Şorun(?) then moved to Geyve, Skopje (Üsküp), Lacin and Balçova, four places in 19 years. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1891. The last post was in Skopje again in 1897/98.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 1,000 in 1877/78, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Kayseri, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98; the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
