Life#
Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Muhyiddin Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Work began in the Defteri Hakani Kalemi in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Muhyiddin in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1874/75. Next came Kayseri and Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) from 1878 to 1880, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in 1878 and to a post in the land office (Arazi Kalemi) in 1878/79. From 1880 to 1887 the annual entries place Muhyiddin in Ankara, first in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi, from 1881/82 as DH Mufettisi.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,500 in 1878/79, in the Arazi Kalemi in Didymoteicho, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 37.5 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 2 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. After the last annual entry, for 1886/87, the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death). Muhyiddin received a rank (rütbe).
