Life#
Ali Riza Bey was born in Anamur in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ali Riza began work in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Ali Riza as Zabita Katibi in Galata, where the entries run to 1877/78. Next came Beyoğlu from 1878 to 1886, then Istanbul from 1886 to 1907, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Muavini in 1895/96. The last posts were in Üsküdar from 1907 to 1909, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 2,500 in 1907/08, as Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi in Üsküdar, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 38 years of salary come to 485,136 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. The honours of Ali Riza were a rank (rütbe) and the Osmani order.
