Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Mustafa Ferid Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "nazır". Work began in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Mustafa Ferid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gjirokastër (Ergiri). Next came Arta (Narda), Ioannina (Yanya) and Elassona (Alasonya) from 1873 to 1881, then Karanya from 1881 to 1887. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Ferid to Yemen and Hicaz from 1890 to 1897, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru) in 1890/91, then Samawah (Semave) from 1897 to 1904. The last posts were in Sidon (Sayda) from 1904 to 1907. Yemen, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,200 in 1904/05, the peak, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in Sidon, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1906/07, the list of 1907/08 (AH 1325) gives the status word Vefat (death).
